The Affenpinscher is a small breed of dog with very ancient origins. It is characterized by its small size, hard, dense hair and black coat. History and origins of Affenpinscher
Originally from Germany, the Affenpinscher is a very old breed since paintings and woodcuts depicting its ancestors are dated from the 15th and 16th centuries. Used nowadays as a family and companion dog, it was at the time very sought-after for its skills as a rat hunter.
GENERAL APPEARANCE:
The Affenpinscher is a small dog size, compact, wire haired; its face has a simian expression.
IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS:
– The ratio between the length of the body and the height at the withers should, as far as possible, give the impression of a dog inscribed in the square.
BEHAVIOR / TEMPERAMENT:
Fearless, attentive, tenacious and faithful, sometimes passionate and carried away. In its essence it is a pleasant family dog.
HEAD
CRANIAL REGION:
Skull: Rather round than elongated, overall not too heavy, strongly…curved with a clearly defined forehead.
Stop: Accentuated.
FACIAL REGION:
Nose: Round, full and black. Nostrils well open.
Muzzle: Short and straight (not turned up). The muzzle is straight.
Lips: Close to the jaws, black in color.
Jaws/Teeth: Full dentition (42 teeth) with teeth of a pure white. The mandible, which is slightly curved upwards, is above the maxilla. The incisors of a healthy set of teeth are regularly implanted and form a slightly rounded line.
When the mouth is closed, the canines and incisors must not be not be visible; likewise, when the mouth is closed, the Affenpinscher must not show the tongue. The absence of 2 PM1s, PM2 or PM3, respectively the absence of two teeth of these three categories is tolerated.
Eyes: Dark, rather rounded and ball-shaped; the rims of the eyelids pigmented with black pigments that fit the shape of the eyeball well and are framed by a crown of stiff hair.
Ears: Set high, pointing symmetrically forward, in V-shaped, with the inner edges of the ears abutting the head. Ears straight, small, symmetrically erect and also vertically as possible.
NECK: Straight, rather short, firmly implanted, solid; the skin of the throat is well applied and does not form folds.

BODY: Solid, square, compact.
Topline: From withers slightly sloping backwards, forming an almost straight line.
Withers: It is the highest point of the topline.
Back: Strong, short and firm.
Loin: Short and strong; the distance from the last costal arch to the hip is short, so that the dog appears to be picked up.
Croup: Short, merging imperceptibly into a slight curve. in the root of the tail.
Chest: Slightly flattened on the sides, width moderate, it goes below elbow level.
Underline and belly: Moderately tucked up; the underline is almost parallel to the top line (from the withers to the tail).
TAIL: Natural: the objective to be reached is the Sabre tail or as a sickle.

MEMBERS
SENIOR MEMBERS:
Overview: The forefathers are solid, straight, parallel and not tight.
Shoulder: Well-muscled. The shoulder blade is long, oblique (forming an angle of about 45° to the horizontal) and applied flat.
Upper arm: Close to the body, strong and muscular.
Elbow: Correctly applied, turned neither in nor out.
Forearm: Strongly developed, straight seen from all sides.
Carpus: Solid and strong.
Pastern: Seen from the front vertical, seen from the side slightly sloping by
ground ratio, strongly developed and muscular.
Forefeet: Short and round; toes tight and arched. (cat’s feet), strong pads, short, black, and black fingernails and solid.
POSTERIOR MEMBERS:
Overview: Seen in profile, the hind legs are oblique and moderately angulated; seen from behind they are parallel.
Upper thigh: Strongly muscled, broad.
Stifle (knee): Turned neither in nor out.
Lower thigh: Long and strong.
Hock joint: Moderately angulated.
Metatarsus (Rear pastern): Vertical to the ground.
Hind feet: Slightly longer than the forefeet; toes are tight and arched, the nails short and black.
GAIT / MOVEMENT: Trotting gait, free and flowing; the thrust of the hindquarters is moderate. Seen from front and back, the movement is straight and parallel.
SKIN: Well applied over the whole body.
DRESS
Quality of the hair: On the body, the hair must be hard and well furnished. On the head it forms the characteristic ornament composed of eyebrows in bushy prickly, crowning framing of the eyes, with an imposing beard, toupee and sideburns. At the head, the hair must be as stiff as possible, in strands that stand up radially.
These features are essential to produce the expression ape.
Hair color: Pure black with black undercoat.
SIZE AND WEIGHT:
Height at the withers: For males and females: 25 to 30 cm.
Weight: For males and females: about 4 to 6 kg.
FAULTS: Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered as a defect which will be penalized according to its and its consequences on the health and well-being of the dog.
In particular:
– General constitution heavy or light, subject high or low on paws.
– Light eyes.
– Ears set low or very long, carried ears differently from each other.
– Floating ears.
– Back too long, arched or unsupported.
– Slanted back.
– Croup swallowed.
– Root of tail tilted towards the head.
– Hindquarters too strongly bent, barrel-shaped.
– Feet elongated.
– Coat short, soft, wavy, bushy, silky, spotted or of color white.
– Size 1 cm below or 1 cm above the standards
SERIOUS FAULTS
– Insufficient sexual character (e.g. female to male type).
– Too fine bone structure.
– Muzzle snubbed like a griffin, or too long.
– Undershot mouth too developed, pincer bite.
– Bulging eyes.
– Elbows turned out.
– Hocks turned inwards.
– Size less than or more than 1 cm and less than 2 cm above the body.
DEFECTS LEADING TO EXCLUSION:
– Aggressive or timid dog.
– Any dog clearly showing obvious abnormalities of order physical or behavioral will be disqualified.
– Any malformation.
– Insufficiently typed subject.
– Serious defects in constitution, hair or body structure color.
– Defects in bite such as scissor bite or deviation of the incisal arch.
– Size less than or more than 2 cm above the standards.
N.B
– Males must have two normal-looking testicles fully descended into the scrotum.
– Only dogs that are healthy and capable of performing the functions to which they were selected, and whose morphology is typical of the breed, can be used for breeding.
